McLaughlin of Teaneck, New Jersey Eldest of four brothers that were all fighting in the war Born in Weehawken, New Jersey Attended Holy Trinity School in Hackensack, New Jersey Graduated in 1935 from St. Cecilia High School in Englewood, New Jersey At this school, he played football as a right tackle He went to Bergen College He was employed by the North American Insurance Company until 1940 Called to service in 1940 Went through basic training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina Went through officer training and Infantry Candidate school at Fort Benning, Georgia He was shot through the shoulder blade while fighting in Cassino in Italy, but he recovered well. After a six week convalescence, he was assigned as acting intelligence officer on his battalion staff and then promoted to first lieutenant On September 28, 1944, he wrote in a letter to his parents that his unit was engaged in mountain fighting against Germans in Northern Italy In this letter, he also wrote about how he felt that the war would end soon, and he predicted an early victory He died only a few days before his letter reached his parents He died from wounds received while fighting His death was the first of two within eight days for his mother's close family. Her brother, James O' Donnelly of Weehawken, died on October 8
